Understanding UK Clock Changes: Spring Forward, Autumn Back

Understanding UK Clock Changes: Spring Forward, Autumn Back

What is Daylight Saving Time?

The United Kingdom observes Daylight Saving Time (DST), where clocks change twice a year to make better use of daylight. This practice is easily remembered as “Spring Forward, Autumn Back.”

During spring, clocks move forward by one hour at 1:00 AM on the last Sunday in March, marking the start of British Summer Time (BST), which is GMT + 1 hour. This means we “lose” an hour of sleep but gain longer, brighter evenings. In autumn, clocks go back by one hour at 2:00 AM on the last Sunday in October, returning us to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). We “gain” an extra hour of sleep, but evenings become darker earlier.

Why Do We Change the Clocks?

Daylight Saving Time was introduced to make better use of natural daylight. By shifting an hour of daylight from morning to evening during warmer months, people can enjoy longer evenings after school or work. This practice was originally adopted during World War I to conserve energy, as less artificial lighting was needed when daylight extended into the evening hours.

Today, DST continues to encourage outdoor activities, support businesses, and help families make the most of daylight hours. However, it does come with challenges, including disrupted sleep patterns and the adjustment period that follows each change.

Important Dates: When Do the Clocks Change?

Mark your calendars! Here are the upcoming clock change dates for the next few years:

  • 2025: Clocks go forward on 30 March | Clocks go back on 26 October
  • 2026: Clocks go forward on 29 March | Clocks go back on 25 October
  • 2027: Clocks go forward on 28 March | Clocks go back on 31 October

This Weekend: A Real-Life Example

This Sunday, October 26, 2025, the clocks will change! At 2:00 AM, the time will jump back to 1:00 AM, giving everyone an extra hour in bed — a 25-hour day. The UK will shift from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

What This Means for You:

  • Sunday morning: Enjoy an extra hour of sleep
  • Monday onwards: Mornings will be lighter earlier, but evenings will become darker sooner
  • Remember: Most smartphones and digital devices update automatically, but check manual clocks, car dashboards, and watches on Saturday night

Tips for Parents and Students

Children may find the adjustment challenging as their internal clocks take a few days to adapt. Try gradually adjusting bedtimes by 10–15 minutes in the days leading up to the change. Encourage outdoor activity during daylight hours to help reset sleep patterns naturally.

The clock change reminds us that winter is approaching, bringing cosy evenings and earlier sunsets. Embrace the change, prepare your family, and make the most of that extra hour!
